John Calipari Doesn’t Think Damion Lee Should Have Been Allowed To Transfer To Louisville

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgJohn Calipari sits in a Kentucky sweatshirt.Twitter/@SECNetwork john calipari rivalry weekTwitter/@SECNetworkLeave it to John Calipari—he knows how to irk his rivals in Louisville, even when he says he doesn’t intend to. Former assistant Bruiser Flint was fired after 15 seasons at Drexel. He, of course, was the former head coach of Damion Lee, who used his final year of eligibility to head to Louisville in an attempt to make an NCAA Tournament. Calipari believes if Lee stayed at Drexel for his final year, Flint would have kept his job. From the Courier-Journal:“The NCAA has a rule that a kid can leave a program like Drexel after being coached and molded for three years and go to another school without having to sit out,” Calipari said. “If Lee is there, they’re in the NCAA tournament. … It’s not about the school that took him. It’s about we let it happen.Calipari has utilized the rule before, taking Julius Mays ahead of the 2012-13 season. He defends that decision by saying that if Mays didn’t go to Kentucky, he would go somewhere anyway.“Understand, I’ve been in a dogfight to say this is ridiculous. We took a kid because I saw Duke did it. Even then, I was like, ‘It disgusts me that we’re doing this.’ The kid was going to go somewhere, so why don’t we take him?”To be fair to Calipari, it really doesn’t seem like he’s going out of his way to criticize Louisville here, but the grad transfer rule is one of the only things that gives college athletes agency over their careers after signing day. As one of the most vocal coaches about the rights of players, this is a peculiar stance for him to take.[Courier-Journal]More: The 10 CFB Teams That Could Go Undefeated In 2016 >>>last_img read more

AI Express pilots licence suspended for 1 yr

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgNew Delhi: Aviation regulator DGCA on Tuesday suspended for a year the license of an Air India Express pilot who overshot the runway while landing an aircraft at Mangalore airport on June 30, sources said. The flight IX-384 was coming from Dubai. “The final investigation by the regulator has found that the final approach of the B737 aircraft was ‘unstabilised’. The aircraft speed was high and it touched down late, around 900 metres (2,952 feet) from the threshold area of runway 24, which resulted in runway excursion and damage to the aircraft,” a source told PTI. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’The threshold area is from where the runway strip begins. Next to threshold area is the touchdown zone, where the aircraft should touch down during landing. The source said the licence of the pilot, Captain Pravin Tumram, was suspended on Tuesday by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for a period of one year. “The period of one year would be counted from the date of the incident,” the source said. The airport had seen a similar incident on that very runway nine years ago involving an aircraft of the same airline. There were only eight survivors in this crash. A Court of Inquiry, established by the Centre had found that the cause of the 2010 incident was the pilot-in-command’s failure to discontinue the ‘unstabilised approach’ and his persistence in continuing with landing, despite three calls from the First Officer to ‘go around’ and a number of warnings from enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS). “The final touch down of the aircraft was at about 5200 ft (1584 metres) from the beginning of runway 24, leaving only about 2800 feet to the end of the paved surface, to stop the aircraft,” the Court of Inquiry had found.last_img read more

Middle East situation tops Assembly Presidents talks with Egyptian leader

Posted on | 2 Comments

The situation in the Middle East – including the report by a United Nations fact-finding mission into the deadly conflict in the Gaza Strip at the start of last year – was among the topics discussed today in Cairo between the President of the General Assembly and the leader of Egypt. Ali Treki told Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that he plans to hold a plenary meeting as soon as possible to pass a resolution regarding the implementation of the recommendations made by the mission led by Justice Richard Goldstone, a former UN war crimes prosecutor, into the conflict. The Goldstone Report, as it has become known, found that both Israeli forces and Palestinian militants were guilty of serious human rights violations and breaches of humanitarian law during the Gaza conflict, which began in late December 2008. The Assembly has endorsed the mission’s findings. The four-member fact-finding team, set up at the request of the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council, called on the two sides to carry out independent credible investigations into their actions during the conflict. In his follow-up report submitted at the request of the Assembly, Mr. Ban stressed that he hoped Israel and the Palestinians would conduct those inquiries appropriately. “International humanitarian law needs to be fully respected and civilians must be protected in all situations and circumstances,” he wrote. Today’s talks between Mr. Mubarak and the Assembly President also touched on the situation in the war-ravaged Sudanese region of Darfur, where, according to media reports, the Government and the rebel group known as the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) struck a deal over the weekend paving the way for peace. Among other issues raised during the meeting, according to the Assembly President’s spokesperson, Jean Victor Nkolo, were disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – eight economic and social targets with a 2015 deadline. While in Egypt, Mr. Treki also held talks with the nation’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and other senior officials. In an address to the Council of the League of Arab States yesterday, he highlighted the main priorities of the Assembly’s 64th session, including dialogue among civilizations. The Council “welcomed these initiatives by President Treki, underlining the need to revitalize the work of the General Assembly in tackling important issues on the international agenda,” Mr. Nkolo told reporters in New York. Before departing for the Egyptian capital, Mr. Treki met with Senior Vice-President for External Affairs at the World Bank Marwan al-Muasher in New York, and the two men conferred on a range of issues, such as post-conflict peacebuilding and preparations for September’s formal review of progress made on achieving the MDGs. 22 February 2010The situation in the Middle East – including the report by a United Nations fact-finding mission into the deadly conflict in the Gaza Strip at the start of last year – was among the topics discussed today in Cairo between the President of the General Assembly and the leader of Egypt. read more

Immediate action needed to support olive farmers in occupied Palestinian territory –

Posted on | 2 Comments

“The annual olive harvest is a key economic, social and cultural event for Palestinians,” said UN Humanitarian Coordinator, James W. Rawley, during his visit.“Immediate action in support of olive farmers is required. This includes ensuring protection from attacks by settlers; accountability for settler violence; the lifting of restrictions on Palestinians’ access to their agricultural land; and continued support to olive producing communities,” said Mr. Rawley. Joining Mr. Rawley on his field visit were members of the diplomatic and donor community, the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture, and representatives of humanitarian organizations. They heard from community representatives and olive farmers in the towns of Al Janiya in the Ramallah governorate, and Biddu in the Jerusalem governorate describe the negative impact that continued settler violence and access restrictions to their olive groves have on their livelihoods. Every year, communities with olive groves located between the barrier and the “Green Line”, and in the vicinity of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, face serious challenges in maintaining and harvesting their olive crops. This undermines livelihoods and increases dependency on aid.The olive oil industry constitutes 25 per cent of the occupied Palestinian Territories’ agricultural income. From 2006 to the end of September 2014, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recorded over 2,300 settler-related incidents resulting in Palestinian casualties or property damage in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. From 2009 to the end of August 2014, nearly 50,000 fruit-bearing trees, mainly olives, were destroyed or damaged in such incidents. Approximately 150 Palestinian communities have land located between the Barrier and the Green Line. Only some 50 per cent of permit applications for farmers’ access to their own agricultural land are approved during the olive harvest, based on monitoring by OCHA over a four-year period. read more

Dog so fat vets said it resembled a seal loses six stone

Scottish SPCA centre manager for Edinburgh Diane Aitchison said: “Tyko has lost 37kg after coming into our care weighing a massive 49.5kg.”He’ll need medication for the rest of his life as he has a thyroid problem but he doesn’t let it affect him”He’s now looking for an active forever home to keep his fitness up. He loves chasing a ball, but he’s not so keen to give it back.”We feel he would be best suited to an adult-only home without any other dogs or cats.” Credit:Scottish SPCAcenter_img The Scottish SPCA seized the animal after they were tipped off by his owner’s neighbour.Vets said they had never seen such an obese dog.His owner, 60-year-old Denise Leitch had bought the dog for her husband as a Christmas present and was charged as she was responsible for him.Mrs Leitch pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide treatment for a morbidly obese dog.She was admonished at Selkirk Sheriff Court after her year-long period of deferred sentence.Defence lawyer Natalie Paterson said that Tyko had been “freaked out” by a nearby firework display and rarely ventured out to exercise.Ms Paterson said: “She has already been punished by losing custody of the dog. It was not intentional for the dog to reach that size but it is accepted she did not seek the proper treatment.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Spotify Radio meshes the best of streaming and physical media

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgThe magic of a streaming radio service like Spotify or Rdio is that they divorce music entirely from the idea of physically possessing it, whether as a digital download that lives on your hard drive or a series of grooves pressed into an LP. When it comes to media, though, the physicality of an object imbued with a work of art has magic in its own right. On the one hand, you have a universe of music in your pocket to explore; on the other, a handful of objects with deep, personal and abiding meaning, as well as a concrete place in the personal history of your life.AdChoices广告Jordi Parra’s Spotify Box is an attempt to mesh the magic of both physical media and streaming music. It’s a beautiful reworking of the mix-tape and the radio that brings streaming media, counter-intuitively, to physical discs. Here’s how it works. The radio part of the Spotify Box is just a speaker with a WiFi connection running the Spotify music-streaming client, libspotify, on an embedded Linux install. Along with the radio comes an assortment of tiny RFID discs. These discs can be individually tied to any Spotify track or playlist, so when you pop them in, the music automatically starts to play.I think what I appreciate so much about this concept is the way it shows physical record stores what it could do about streaming media. Physical discs could just be a collection of harder-to-stream-than-audio multimedia (like high definition video or biographical inserts), with the disc of music itself tied to a Spotify playlist. Pop it into your CD player and it pulls that music in from the cloud. In this scheme, you only pay for quality packaging and the extras, and because all the music lives in the cloud, piracy is less of an issue too.Read more at Spotify Radio (via Wired)last_img read more

Posted on | 2 Comments

Posted on | 2 Comments

Le 10 avril 2012 à 16:39 • Maxime Lambertlast_img read more

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgMIAMI LAKES, FLA. (WSVN) – Police are investigating after, they said, an employee at a South Florida Victoria’s Secret was attacked by a mob of women inside the store.Follow Up: Woman turns herself in after Victoria’s Secret employee attacked in Miami LakesRecently released surveillance video caught the moment five women ambushed the employee at a Victoria’s Secret, located at 6800 Main St., in an attempt to rob the business, Tuesday morning, at around 10 a.m.Police said when one of the women was walking toward the exit, the sales associate asked if she wanted her to hold the merchandise for her. At that moment, surveillance caught the crook as she grabbed the employee’s hair. Then, several other women joined in, hitting and punching her in the face.Several witnesses in the store gathered around but didn’t seem to intervene. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called to the scene to treat the injured employee. The footage then showed the suspects leaving the store, but one of the women is then seen coming back and hitting the sales associate again before taking off. “Police need to grab these women,” said one shopper. “These people out here are crazy.”A security guard has since been on patrol inside the store for safety measures. The sales associate was able to capture clear images of some of the women when one of them returned inside the store. “The surveillance camera is not as helpful as those pictures right there from bystanders,” said Miami Lakes resident Carlos Crespo.Miami-Dade Police continue their search for those involved. If you recognize any of them, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Sharon Rowlands Resigns as CEO of Penton Media

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgSharon Rowlands is resigning as Penton Media CEO, effective Nov. 1. In a memo sent to Penton employees this morning, Rowlands says she is leaving to become “CEO of a large global company–more than three times the size of Penton–in the security and risk information marketplace.” (The company is Falls Church, Virginia-based Altegrity.)UPDATE: Following Rowland’s departure, executives from Penton’s two private equity-owners–Tyler Zachem, managing director of MidOcean Partners and Anup Bagaria, vice chairman and managing director of Wasserstein & Co.–will become interim co-CEOs while a search for a replacement is conducted.   Rowlands, the former president and CEO of Thomson Financial, became CEO of Penton in October 2008. Under her tenure, Rowlands [pictured] saw Penton through a pre-packaged bankruptcy filing and an aggressive shift toward marketing services that included the acquisition of digital marketing services agency EyeTraffic Media and the formation of a dedicated Marketing Services Group. She will remain on Penton’s board of directors. NOTE: Check foliomag.com throughout the day for more on this breaking story. In a memo obtained by FOLIO:, Rowlands writes, Dear Colleagues:After serving as CEO of Penton for three years, I want to let you know that I am resigning my management role but will remain on Penton’s Board of Directors. This was an extremely difficult decision for me — not only have I appreciated the opportunity to lead Penton, but it is also an exciting time in the Company’s evolution. Without a doubt, Penton is a great company with a bright future, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together. So why am I stepping down as CEO? I was approached with an opportunity to become CEO of a large global company – more than three times the size of Penton – in the security and risk information marketplace, and I think it will provide me with an enormous challenge.Let me be clear, my decision is absolutely no reflection on Penton. The company is in great shape and well on its way to becoming a leading global media provider. first_imgTeacher and ceramic artist Dipalee Daroz mesmerizes with a stunning suite of works at Galerie Nvya (Square One) entitled ‘The Altered Perspective’.This range of works includes an irresistible set of stoneware sculptural forms. While glazes and clay bodies are dense and durable; however, the colour range is limited. Because of the varying effects of oxidation and reduction on glaze colorants, the few coloring oxides that are viable in this range can still produce a rich. But Dipalee adds a robust resonance to this limited, pale palette of deepened smoky and burnt embers woven into her firings. if much more limited, pale Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”My objects are reminiscent of the historic past,” says Dipalee about her sculptural stoneware. ” Their rawness and spontaneity in tune with the prevailing environment of mindless violence and ruthless survival.’ Dipalee says that connotative ascent of the human psyche is as significant and universal as the primal ones. She takes the example of ice age hunter-gatherers who made ceramic pots to cook fish. She finds a comparison in the journey of the self. At Gallerie Nvya it’s as if you have been invited into a journey that is akin to a time warp. There are a series of mesmerizing works that seem to look like instruments from another age-their fired matte finish glazes with smoky timbres just the right shade of juxtapositions – nothing is excessive and this entire collection is shorn of superficial embellishment. Her quest for a clay body that vitrifies and gives both texture and colour at this temperature necessitates mixing her own recipes. Over the years at her studio at Aaya Nagar, she has perfected her love for both materiala and experimenting so spends time constantly tweaking her clay bodies.Constantly driven by the journey which allows her to create ambiguous images and artifacts in natural and matte finish glazes to create installations and sculptures, her practice begins out of a scientific curiosity as she seeks materials that intrigue her. “I want to become involved in what the material represents and how I can transform into something beyond expectations,” she adds. “My process is characterised by control and freedom, one side creating a framework and the other, usually the material, pushing back and asserting itself in little pieces and the process of overlap so I can create a sculptural ethos.” Clay body TypeTypically, mid-range clay is stoneware, a plastic clay that is often grey when moist. Getting its name from the dense, rock-like nature of the clay body when fired, stoneware is typically combined with other clays to modify it, such as ball clays which might be added for plasticity. It is important to note that stoneware is divided into two types – mid-fire and high-fire – and this section of the guide will be referring specifically to mid-fire stoneware. Dipalee excels in her choice of clay body type and the ensuing results seen in the finer details.Fine repertoireShe seems to have a sense of urgency to her work in the period of creation as if trying to beat the passage of time, a feeling that is evidenced by the dense depth and bold gestures of creating definitive sculptural language. Dipalee is one of the finest in her finesse and repertoire-fuelled by a desire to beat the inexorable passage of time, something that led her to create with a new sense of wanting to provide something fresh and yet in many ways, reminiscent of an underlying abstract expressionism, that is not always seen in a world in which pottery has been reduced to just reproduction. In the many tendrils and projections of this brilliant culling, she emerges as a ceramic artist who fills her work with thick and visceral, irrevocable gestures that boldly declare the hand of the artist as the creator of an album of deepened elements.last_img read more
