Alastair Cook, one of English sport’s quiet achievers

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgAlastair Cook was never the most innovative England cricket captain, his batting was designed to soothe rather than stir the blood and his personality was so cautious that it was little wonder he never featured when flashy sports awards were being handed out.Yet after stepping down from the Test captaincy after four and a half years on Monday, there could still be no real argument about Cook, in his own quiet, undemonstrative fashion, having become one of the great achievers of modern English sport. With the minimum of fuss and maximum solidity at a time when he had to deal with plenty of turmoil within the team, Cook moulded himself into an impressive, respected leader while still managing to remain a towering batsman, England’s all-time top scorer in Test annals. (Alastair Cook steps down as England Test captain after 4-0 defeat vs India)Not that everyone in England perhaps quite recognised the magnitude of what he was achieving.”Alastair Cook is the first Englishman to 10,000 Test runs – but most Poms haven’t seen a single one,” ran one headline in Australia’s Daily Telegraph last year, referring to how his feats tended to remain under the radar since no live cricket is shown on free-to-air television in England. The newspaper had a point. Cook’s consistent excellence has often been under-appreciated compared to the box-office razzmatazz of others like Kevin Pietersen, a dazzling talent but one which cast a long shadow over the Essex man’s reign.Still, Cook leaves his job, able to look at a fairly remarkable resume that features 24 wins in a record 59 tests in charge, Ashes victories at home in 2013 and 2015 as well as series wins in India and South Africa. (Stats: Alastair Cook England’s leading run-scorer, most successful captain in Tests)advertisementThere were jarring setbacks, of course, like the whitewash Ashes defeat in Australia and the 4-0 loss to India over the winter that eventually persuaded him his time was up as captain, yet overall it was hard not to agree with Monday’s salute from predecessor Andrew Strauss.”He’s led the team with determination, conviction and a huge amount of pride and his record stands for itself,” said Strauss, now director of England Cricket.”He deserves to be seen as one of our country’s great captains.”The latter assertion is up for debate. Cook’s winning percentage of 40.67 at the helm is only the fourth best of the six captains to have led England in more than 40 tests, even though he oversaw an era featuring world-class players from Pietersen, Graeme Swann, James Anderson and Stuart Broad to Ben Stokes and Joe Root.On a personal level, though, he maintained the highest standards, his superb temperament propelling him to become England’s most prolific batsman — and the 10th most prolific from any country — with 11,057 runs in 140 tests. (Alastair Cook ‘drained’ by England captain job, says Andrew Strauss)After taking over as captain in 2012, perhaps his finest achievement were the three centuries he compiled in England’s first Test series win in India in 28 years, a feat that looks even more monumental in light of this winter’s thrashing. Now, still just 32 and freed from captaincy pressures, Cook could continue to do serious damage to that top-10 Test list while also helping his obvious successor Joe Root ease into the role of captain. It would be no surprise to see Cook go past Ricky Ponting, currently second on the list with 13,378 runs, even if Sachin Tendulkar’s world record mark of 15,921 looks insurmountable. (#BringBackKP: Kevin Pietersen tweets after Alastair Cook resigns as England captain)One suspects Root, a rare and brilliant talent, could bring a daring approach to the job that was beyond Cook.Yet now that he can sit back and reflect on a job well done, Cook, England’s ‘Captain Sensible’, should content himself that he led with dignity, toughness, gentlemanly spirit — and lots and lots of runs.last_img read more

Boo boys won’t break determined Van Dijk

first_imgLiverpool Boos at Southampton & bleating from pundits won’t break Van Dijk Melissa Reddy Liverpool FC Correspondent 18:00 2/11/18 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Virgil van Dijk Liverpool Liverpool Premier League Southampton v Liverpool Southampton Opinion The defender will face a hostile reception on Sunday, but has the steeliness to ignore the jeers as well as the quick judgement of his abilities The speed with which a club is derided for not spending big on a player they need is surpassed by the swiftness with which they are decried for spending big on a player they need. Forgive the parallelism to an ancient proverb and welcome to modern football coverage.Jurgen Klopp knew the above to be accurate, envisioned the cannon of criticism being armed around the corner and so, when Liverpool parted with £75 million for Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, the German manager went on the offensive.“Forget about the price” was his instruction. “We only talk about the player and what he can bring in; the quality, the mentality, the character.” Article continues below Editors’ Picks Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Overlook the cost, missing any and every chance to reference a world-record fee for a defender? As if. The figure has been rolled out each time the club have conceded since the 26-year-old’s switch from St Mary’s, even when he hasn’t been on the pitch. If the centre-back has not started – as was the case in the 4-3 victory over Manchester City – the narrative centres around how he could have prevented the goals let in. When he is part of the rearguard, it switches to how the ‘£75m man’ hasn’t actually made much of a difference, with his faults framed.Van Dijk inked a five-and-a-half-year deal with Liverpool but that doesn’t circumvent the desperation to judge him after just four appearances on account of his overhead.Klopp has provided the most balanced view on the new signing’s settling-in period, saying it was “as we expected it to be, with a few ups and downs.”Factoring in the Netherlands international’s long injury-lay off after damaging a ligament in the sole of his foot last January, his transfer battle with Saints, as well as the fact that he has to become accustomed to a fresh style of play plus different personnel, the Reds boss pointed out that “we will all see Virgil van Dijk at his best after the summer.”GFX Jurgen Klopp Van DijkEven though he is still finding his feet on Merseyside, what Liverpool’s record recruit adds has been clear. He did not lose an aerial duel against Tottenham, for example, against whom he also produced eight clearances and two interceptions. At Swansea, none of Van Dijk’s team-mates managed as many touches as him and his 83 passes in the opposition’s half were 95 per cent accurate. He led the way for clearances amongst both sides and contested 13 aerial duels, winning 77% of them. Two of Liverpool’s clearest chances to score at the Liberty Stadium involved the Dutchman, yet the main takeaway from that performance for too many was that his defensive header off Sam Clucas’s corner wasn’t strong enough, resulting in Swansea’s winner. At Anfield, in the 2-2 draw with Spurs, another commanding display in which Harry Kane – the standout striker in world football – was rendered ineffective but for a second successful attempt from the penalty spot, was distilled down to Van Dijk giving away a spot kick at the death.Van Dijk LFC“No one will talk about my performance in general,” he said after the encounter against Mauricio Pochettino’s side. “We defended very well, had two penalties against us with a lot of question marks around them, but no one is going to talk about that.”As a team, we did very well against one of the best strikers in Europe. I know because I made such a big step, for a lot of money, everything is going to be analysed.“No one is going to look at the good things you do. Everybody is going to watch the bad things and that is how it is.”But I will discuss it with the people who want to make me better, who can make me better, and that is the manager and the players around me. If they think it is right then that is the way forward.”Those within Melwood have noted that Van Dijk’s stats so far only tell part of the story: his team-mates have flagged how helpful and effective his communication skills have been. The No.4 commands those alongside him, the goalkeeper and the midfield.HD Virgil van DijkThere has also been an appreciation over how much the left-sided defender has wanted to soak in over a short period of time to ensure he is up to speed with the all-round expectations at Liverpool. On Sunday, Van Dijk will return to Southampton prepared for an antagonistic atmosphere. He signed a long-term deal with Saints in May 2016, only to hand in a transfer request and agitate for a move to Anfield the following summer before eventually getting his way last month – but not before his commitment was questioned.“Maybe they can boo the whole game,” Van Dijk said. “What can you do about it? You can’t do anything. I made the decision, I have enjoyed every bit of it and I am very grateful for everything that Southampton did for me.“I have moved on, they have moved on.”Virgil van Dijk GFXKlopp has to settle on his pairing in the heart of defence for the fixture – does he partner Van Dijk with fellow ex-Saint Dejan Lovren again, does he restore Joel Matip to the fold for the Croatian, or use the latter two?Despite having the smallest sample to work off, the first option seems a smart one. Van Dijk and Lovren started together for the first time last Sunday, and bar the two contentious penalty incidents against Tottenham, were incredibly solid.Matip has looked less convincing and comfortable next to his Breda-born team-mate, with the duo changing position in-game too often and attacking balls in the other’s zone.Lovren, however, has not had the easiest of times when returning to St Mary’s, despite facing Southampton more than any other side while at Liverpool. He will be more accustomed to the constant jeers there than Van Dijk, whose steeliness sits alongside his aerial ability, comfort in defending big spaces and ease in possession – the key attributes that made him Klopp’s ideal centre-back.“It is a strength of mine to not really bother too much when people have their opinions, especially negative opinions,” said Liverpool’s sole January addition to the first-team.Given the microscope will not shift from his cost or every mistake, that fortitude will be indispensable for Van Dijk. CWHL player hopes to spread positive message by announcing shes transgender

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgTORONTO – Jessica Platt gave up hockey as a teenager a decade ago. At the time she didn’t know where she fit into the game. But the desire to play the sport never went away for the 28-year-old Toronto Furies defenceman, the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.“Hockey is incredibly important in my life, I take every opportunity I can to get on the ice and play,” said Platt. “I feel at home, feel better on the ice.”Platt posted a message on Instagram on Wednesday announcing her decision to go public with her gender identity, thanking her friends, family and the CWHL for their support.“It’s been crazy, like a whirlwind,” she said of the reaction. “Got all sorts of supportive messages from people on social media, text messages, phone calls. It’s been great.”The Bright’s Grove, Ont., native grew up playing sports on boy’s teams and said she first questioned her gender identity in high school when she noticed “something was different.”“I guess looking back now you could say there was clear signs I should have known something was up (sooner), but high school was when I tried to start figuring everything out.”Platt took a break from hockey after her experience on the boy’s high school team, saying she loved playing but felt “uncomfortable” within the culture. After graduating high school, she took some time and eventually decided on hormone replacement therapy to identify as female.“I figured out first that I was transgender, then I went to university, decided that it was right for me to transition so I went about the process of finding the right doctor for hormone therapy and it all came with time.”Platt, with her family’s support, began her medical transition in 2012. She graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2014, and along the way took on a job as a skating instructor. That’s when she felt inspired to get back into hockey.“I think teaching the younger generation how to do what I love kind of gave me a really strong desire to get out there and play again,” she said.Platt’s journey to the CWHL began in an adult recreation league in Waterloo, Ont. She became curious about women’s options and came across the now seven-team league originally established in 1997.Platt said she changed her diet and training routine, dropping 60 pounds by working out six days a week. She put her focus on getting into hockey at the top level for women in Canada and entered herself in the 2016 CWHL Draft. The five-foot-eight 155-pound blue-liner was selected with the 61st overall pick. She dressed in four games for the Furies last year as a call-up and was added on a full-time basis this season. She scored the first goal of her career in December.“It had always been my dream to play pro hockey so I took some time, thought about it and I was drafted,” she said.“I always had talent, just never nurtured it and when I started to find happiness in my life I decided to take better care of myself.”The CWHL was the first league to partner with the You Can Play Project in December 2012. In announcing the partnership at the time, You Can Play said it was meant to ensure “equality for all of the CWHL’s athletes, coaches, staff, and fans, without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity.”Platt said she made her gender identity public with the hope that she can help other transgender athletes feel comfortable with who they are.“I think my main goal is to help others,” she said. “I know when I was growing up I didn’t have a lot of people to look up to. I didn’t know much about what it was to be transgender.”Platt doesn’t expect everyone to be on board with her announcement, knowing some may wonder if she has any type of edge in women’s sports.“I personally don’t think I have an advantage,” she said. “I think that’s a misconception people get when they assume guys are better than girls at everything. But frankly I know a lot of women who are better than some men.“I think within the hockey world, within the league, I don’t expect anything to change (for me). I know there will be people out there that say negative things but I don’t expect too much to change for me except to try and help people through tough times.”Platt said there was “100 per cent” anxiety when she posted the announcement. But the decision to do so was made easier with the changing of times and other transgender athletes reaching out to give her support. She talked with American triathlete and transgender athlete advocate Chris Mosier beforehand and texted with hockey player Harrison Browne, a transgender athlete who plays in the National Women’s Hockey League and identifies as male.“I don’t think it would have been as easy two years ago, not to say it’s easy now,” she said. “I think there’s been a lot of conversation lately about trans rights and trans issues that make coming out with this information a little bit easier.”Platt, who works as a cashier at a software company in Waterloo, said she chose January to make her announcement because she wanted to start the new year on a positive note and “get a positive message out there.”“I think it’s important to bring visibility to trans athletes and show people you can still follow your dreams and be who you are meant to be.”last_img read more

UN and Saudi Arabia stress importance of Arab Peace Initiative

Posted on | 2 Comments

21 April 2008The senior United Nations envoy on the Middle East and Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister have underscored the continued importance of the Arab Peace Initiative during a meeting in Riyadh on the latest developments in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Process Robert Serry and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal also stressed their shared commitment to a comprehensive regional peace based on Security Council resolutions and international law during yesterday’s meeting, UN spokesperson Michele Montas told reporters in New York today. They conferred on the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian talks as well as on the situation on the ground in the occupied Palestinian territory, including moves to address the grave humanitarian conditions faced by the Gaza Strip. “In addition, they discussed efforts to ensure implementation of Phase I Road Map obligations,” Ms. Montas said. The Arab Peace Initiative, a plan adopted in Beirut by the region’s leaders in March 2002, is based on the principle of land for peace. It calls for Israel to withdraw from all Arab lands occupied since 1967, recognize an independent Palestinian State and provide a just solution to the issue of Palestinian refugees. In return Arab countries would recognize Israel, end their conflict and normalize relations. In a related development, no diesel or petrol has entered Gaza since the 9 April attack by Palestinian militants on the Nahal Oz fuel depot, according to Mr. Serry’s office, known as UNSCO. The UN and its humanitarian partners, which have already been squeezed by shortages, will shut down their operations – including the provision of health, education, food, water, sanitation and other key services to the area’s 1.5 million residents – in a few days if fuel supplies are not restored immediately. All international aid agencies operating in Gaza are scheduled to meet tomorrow to assess the increasingly dire situation. read more

Security Council voices outrage at deadly shelling of Ivorian market

Posted on | 2 Comments

21 March 2011The Security Council has expressed its indignation at the deadly shelling of a market in Côte d’Ivoire’s commercial capital and warned that it will punish anyone who obstructs the resolution of the country’s prolonged post-election crisis. As many as 30 unarmed civilians were killed and 60 others were injured when the market in the Abobo neighbourhood of the city of Abidjan was attacked on Thursday, according to the UN peacekeeping mission in Côte d’Ivoire (known as UNOCI).The shelling was allegedly carried out by elements of the Ivorian Defense and security forces (FDSCI), which are loyal to former president Laurent Gbagbo, who lost a UN-certified and internationally recognized election to the opposition figure Alassane Ouattara last November but has since refused to step down. Abobo is considered a stronghold of supporters of Mr. Ouattara.Speaking to the press on Friday night, Ambassador Wang Min of China, which holds the Council presidency this month, stressed that such attacks as the shelling of the market will not go unpunished and the perpetrators must be held accountable.“The members of the Security Council reiterate their deep concern about the continuing post-electoral crisis in Côte d’Ivoire and its negative humanitarian consequences on the civilian population, including refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs),” he said.Mr. Wang warned that Council members were determined “to impose measures, including targeted sanctions, against those who impede the peaceful resolution of the crisis, obstruct the work of UNOCI and other international actors in Côte d’Ivoire or commit violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.”Cote read more

UN refugee agency reshapes protection toolkit for a world on the move

Posted on | 2 Comments

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued its original 10-point plan of action in 2006.“What this10-point plan on mixed movements does is collect practices, good examples, and ways and means to deal with the phenomenon of human mobility in all its dimensions – in its refugee dimension, but also its migratory dimension,” said UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, Volker Türk. Mr. Türk noted that, since 2006, the number of people on the move worldwide as a result of conflict, violence and persecution has roughly doubled to 65 million, including over 21 million refugees. The updated plan takes into account larger and more complex flows of people in today’s world, such as an increase in the number of people seeking safety beyond the countries of first asylum – in Europe, and other parts of the world such as the Northern Triangle of Central America, and Southeast Asia – and the growing use of smuggling and trafficking routes by mixed flows of refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants.“It is clear that countries and organizations such as UNHCR and NGOs [non-governmental organizations] will have to deal with these new realities,” Türk said. “The 10-point plan shows practically, on the basis of over 100 new examples that were added to make the case, that indeed you can manage and address these phenomena,” he added. It provides a “nuts and bolts” approach to help states and humanitarian workers identify vulnerable people on the move and in need of international protection, and respond appropriately to their needs, Türk said. read more

Hernandez double helps West Ham to 30 win at Newcastle

Posted on | 2 Comments

NEWCASTLE, England — Javier Hernandez brought Newcastle’s recovery in the English Premier League to a juddering halt by scoring twice in West Ham’s 3-0 win at St James’ Park on Saturday. The Mexico international struck either side of halftime, with Felipe Anderson adding a third in injury time to end Newcastle’s three-game winning streak in comprehensive fashion on an afternoon when West Ham might have won by a bigger margin.Newcastle enjoyed plenty of the ball, but was unable to do enough with it to get something out of the game and was hit repeatedly on the counterattack as Hernandez, Marko Arnautovic, and Anderson picked it off at will.Hernandez was recalled by West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini and took his tally of Premier League goals to 48 with an opportunistic strike in the 11th minute and a near finish in the 63rd.His first came when he drifted away to the far post and met a right-wing cross from Robert Snodgrass with a steered finish from six meters out.Hernandez missed two more good chances before doubling West Ham’s lead, running onto Arnautovic’s flick-on and beating the advancing goalkeeper Martin Dubravka with ease.Anderson brushed aside defender Fabian Schar after running on to substitute Jack Wilshere’s pass and found the back of the net for a late third goal.___More AP English soccer:https://apnews.com/tag/PremierLeague andhttps://twitter.com/AP_SportsThe Associated Press read more

first_imgA man was found dead inside a Salmon Creek house late Tuesday after a standoff that blocked access to a residential area for several hours, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. The incident began about 7 p.m. when deputies responded to a report of a disturbance in the 15300 block of Northeast 10th Avenue, according to a sheriff’s office statement released early Wednesday morning. A woman had called to report a disturbance with her boyfriend that had lasted much of the day.The statement said deputies met the woman down the street from the residence and learned that she had been assaulted. When they approached the home to make contact with the man, they heard gunshots from inside the residence and pulled back.Other deputies rushed to the neighborhood and blocked off access to Northeast 10th Avenue as the Southwest Regional SWAT team was activated and responded to the scene, treating it as a standoff with a barricaded subject. After several hours, SWAT members made entry into the house and found the man dead inside. The man’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin.last_img read more

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR The Navy is planning to lease up to 227 acres at Naval Weapons Station Earle, located on the northern part of the Jersey Shore, to a local utility to develop a 32.8-megawatt solar facility.Electricity generated by the solar photovoltaic system would supply the existing commercial grid. The project still is at an early stage, reported the Asbury Park Press.“From what I heard from the base, they only got the go-ahead to proceed with this a month ago,” Russell Macnow, a township committeeman in Colts Neck, told the paper. An environmental assessment by the Navy’s Environmental Planning Division determined the project “would not significantly affect the environment,” according to the story. The project would support the Navy’s goal of producing or procuring 50 percent of its shore-based energy requirements from alternative energy sources by 2020, up from 23 percent now. The service also aims for 50 percent of its facilities to become “net zero” energy installations by 2020.The Navy recently surpassed another milestone — bringing 1 gigawatt of renewable energy generating capacity into procurement.last_img read more

Report Fannie and Freddie Ignored Warnings on Potential Problem Loans

Posted on | 2 Comments

first_imgReport: Fannie and Freddie Ignored Warnings on Potential Problem Loans in Government, Secondary Market About four years after the “”Federal Housing Finance Agency””:http://fhfa.gov/ (FHFA) directed the GSEs to develop a uniform collateral data portal, the “”Office of the Inspector General of the Federal Housing Finance Agency””:http://fhfaoig.gov/ (FHFA OIG) finds the portal is not being used to its potential, and the GSEs continue to purchase loans with red flags.[IMAGE]After “”extensive”” development and testing, the OIG concluded in a “”recent audit””:http://fhfaoig.gov/Content/Files/AUD-2014-008.pdf, “”more remains to be done to use the portal’s data to minimize the risk of loss.””Both enterprises continue to purchase loans despite warning messages from the portal, according to a report the OIG released Thursday.Fannie Mae purchased 56,000 loans for a total of $13 billion from January through June of last year despite warnings from the portal indicating the loans might not meet the GSE’s underwriting requirements, according to the OIG.Meanwhile, Freddie Mac purchased 29,000 loans for a total of $6.7 billion from June through September despite warnings regarding the properties’ valuations, according to the OIG.Each of the 56,000 loans purchased by Fannie Mae came with between one and nine caution messages regarding the loan’s quality.[COLUMN_BREAK]The messages dealt with such issues as confirmation of repairs and “”unauthorized use of single-family loan funds,”” according to the OIG, and in each case the warning message was disregarded using an automatic override.Fannie Mae purchased the loans and “”focused its efforts on reviewing the loans for conformance with its requirements after it bought them,”” according to the OIG.Fannie Mae reportedly “”did not require lenders to explain or resolve potential problems ranging from formatting issues to violations of its underwriting requirements,”” according to the OIG.Similarly, Freddie Mac purchased more than 29,000 loans despite the portal’s warning that “”either no property value could be provided or the value of the property was in question,”” according to the OIG. In fact, in some cases the portal could not even verify that the address existed.Like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac’s approach was to override the warnings and review the loans for issues after purchasing them.In fact, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac both claimed they did not want to “”burden lenders with having to respond to messages,”” according to the OIG.The OIG audit also detected 414,000 instances in which the portal found that an appraiser’s license could not be verified. The “”uniform collateral data portal is intended to improve appraisal data quality and risk management for the Enterprises by collecting appraisal data to help them make informed decisions about the loans they buy,”” the OIG reported.””However, as demonstrated by the results of this audit, these goals are at risk of not being achieved,”” the OIG stated. On the bright side, the audit did cause the GSEs to consider 23 loans totaling $3.4 million for repurchase.
